Doctor Geisteskrank rested his hand on the third and final lever. Despite his thick rubber gloves, his hair and beard fairly crackled.
"We must time it precisely!" he shouted in Bartlett's ear. "Even one moment too soon spoils everything!"
Bartlett only pointed at the gauges on the console; all in the red.
Geisteskrank threw the switch. The sparks flared into nothingness.
"What does it do if we're late?" asked Bartlett.
"Either destroy the universe or create a new one," said Geisteskrank. "Either way, no turning back now."
The light flared again, reflecting equally from his goggles and his wild grin.
